Would you like to combine your holiday with hiking or biking? The beautiful nature in Thy National Park is perfect for cycling, running or hiking trips. Try out the MTB path on the route called Trampestien in Thy National Park, the mountain bike area in Vilsbøl or Tvorup Klitplantage with up to 10 km of routes or take a bike ride on the dunes at Klitmøller. Participate in geocaching and experience surfing at Cold Hawaii. Thisted’s football club and swimming pool are also great locations to workout.
Danhostel Thisted is the ideal starting point for other experiences in Thy National Park Thy. There are several dune plantations off the North Sea, Hanstholm Nature Reserve, the nature reserve called Vejlerne, which has a fantastic conservation-worthy bird life, and two of the country's purest lakes, Vandet Sø and Nors Sø. Denmark's only bird cliff is located at Bulbjerg.
Water Sports and Surfing Paradise at Cold Hawaii
The town of Thisted is known for its fjord, harbour, and nearby beaches. There are plenty of opportunities for swimming, plus sailing and rowing in boats or kayaks. Many divers and surfers enjoy the thrill at Cold Hawaii, a surfing paradise at Klitmøller. If water sports are not your choice, then take in the views at Thisted Bredning (a channel between Mors and Thy in the Limfjord area), Hanklit (a 61 m high moler cliff) and tour the island of Mors.
Thy National Park
Did you know that Denmark's largest wilderness is Thy National Park? Here the waves from the North Sea rush towards the beaches and the wind shoots grains of sand high up on the dunes. The landscape beyond the North Sea reveals beautiful dunes and pure water lakes. Further afield are large, contiguous forests which beckons you to enjoy long walks or cycling trips.
Østerild Test Centre for Large Wind Turbines
In Østerild, visit the test area for Denmark's largest wind turbine. This is where the Nordic region’s largest wind turbines are tested by the world's largest wind turbine manufacturers. View windmills which stand 250 m high and have colossal wing buckles. There is public access to the test area, on foot or by bicycle, but some places are off limits; for example, in areas where the turbines are being installed or dismantled. You can, however, view the work from a distance. There is year-round access to the test area via selected paths and a nature playground is available for children.
A walk on Trampestien will reveal natural areas surrounding our Danhostel. Take a 5.3 km tour which starts at our Danhostel. The route is marked with yellow arrows. If you prefer, take the shortcut marked with red arrows and reduce your trip to 4.2 km.
Baun Plantage is a varied plantation which is like an oasis in the agricultural land. The plantation is a significant biotope for wildlife such as deer and hare. There are also several large areas with fox dens and badgers’ burrows.
Dogs on a leash are welcome. The many paths and green tracks make the plantation suitable for hiking and dog walking.

Lookout Point in Sårup
Up to 500 red deer live on the reserve so expect to see them in several locations, especially when you gaze down from the observation tower in Sårup and from the Sårup slope in the northernmost part of Tved Klitplantage. In late summer, hundreds of animals occasionally gather next to the tower and the slope. Remember to bring your binoculars. (The path to the lookout platform is handicap-friendly).
Hike to Isbjerg in Thy National Park - Denmark's first National Park. Learn about the history behind the landscape, the peculiar nature and the animals and plants which co-exist in this rugged landscape. The trip is 3 km long. Isbjerg is Hanstholm Nature Reserve's highest point - 56 m above sea level. From here, you get a magnificent view of the northern section of Thy National Park, which is framed by the North Sea, Hanstholmen in the north, Tved Klitplantage to the east and Nors Lake (Sø) to the south.
Hanstholm Nature Reserve impresses with its size, reserves and sanctuary for animals and birds. It is a breeding ground for many animals and birds, and it is possible to see animals grazing while sea eagles and osprey fly high above the landscape.
North West Jutland’s Golf Club - Denmark's best par-5 hole
The golf course at Klitmøller has been voted Denmark’s golf course with the best par-5 hole, namely the 439 m long "North 3." The hole is fantastic. The teeing ground is elevated, so you can sense the open spaces. On a windless day, you can hear the sea and the birds. The hole is narrow and seems to be easy to play but can be tricky due to the wind and trees.
