During November-December, the weather in Denmark gets cold and the skies darken, so Christmas is a special time for Danes. The lights, anticipation of being together and the opportunity to shop are welcomed by all. Christmas is traditionally celebrated on December 24. The festive Christmas spirit here is unique to Denmark. They have an expression, “hygge” used for all occasions when people get together and have fun, but it is especially appropriate at this time of the year. Duck is eaten for Christmas dinner with rice pudding for dessert, and Danes light the Christmas tree and dance around it while they sing Christmas carols. There are Christmas markets all over Denmark with lots of Christmas goodies including special foods such as mulled wine, roasted almonds and special cookies. Many Danes and visitors look forward to this time of the year because they get the opportunity to buy gifts for family and friends. One of the biggest Christmas markets is held in Copenhagen at Tivoli, the Amusement Park. This year they will feature a Scandinavian-Russian theme. Many other markets can be found in other areas and cities. Outdoor skating rinks in various locations in the big cities around Denmark are also popular this time of the year.
