Viborg is one of Denmark's oldest cities with a fascinating Viking history, quaint medieval streets, restaurants, cosy cafes and interesting shops. The name Viborg means 'the holy place on the hill,' and the town’s landmark is the impressive Viborg Cathedral, which sits proudly in the centre of town. Viborg has a lively commercial centre, several museums and various sports facilities. The beautiful scenic areas around Viborg, with the Dollerup Hills, the heather-clad slopes, the deciduous forests, and lakes, are ideal for cycle tours, canoeing and hiking. A guided tour of the old town is recommended. Viborg’s location in the centre of Jutland makes it possible to reach the Danish-German border in the south or Skagen in the north in less than 3 hours. The North Sea or Kattegat can be reached in less than 2 hours.
There are many listed buildings in Viborg, including Bispegården, Eksercerhuset, and Karnapgården. There are several museums such as Viborg Museum, Skovgaard Museum, and Viborg Kunsthal (Art Gallery). Bruunshaab Old Cardboard Factory (Bruunshaab Gamle Papfabrik), which is today an industrial museum, was a former cardboard and textile factory located in the middle of the forest. Pay a visit to Viborg Bryghus (Brewery) and taste their hand-brewed beers.
