Bornholm – The Pearl of the Baltic Sea with Sun, Nature & History
Bornholm, known as the Pearl of the Baltic Sea, is Denmark’s fifth-largest island and one of the country’s most unique destinations. With around 45,000 inhabitants, Bornholm is famous for being the sunniest place in Denmark, offering a special blend of nature, history, and culture. Here you will find the island’s iconic round churches, dramatic granite coastlines, sandy beaches like Dueodde, and charming towns such as Gudhjem and Svaneke. Bornholm is also renowned for its food culture – especially smoked herring and local delicacies – and attracts families, backpackers, and outdoor enthusiasts. Surrounded by the Baltic Sea, the island’s hills, forests, and coastal views make it truly different from the rest of Denmark.

The four iconic round churches of Bornholm – Østerlars, Olsker, Nylars, and Nyker – are among the island’s most famous landmarks. Today, they are symbols of Bornholm’s history and a must-visit for anyone exploring the island.
Another highlight is Hammershus, the largest medieval fortress ruins in Northern Europe. Perched dramatically on a cliff top, Hammershus offers spectacular views of Bornholm’s rugged coastline and the Baltic Sea. The ruins tell the story of knights, kings, and power struggles, and remain one of the most impressive historic sites in Denmark.
Bornholm is also known as one of Europe’s best cycling islands. Families and active travelers can easily explore the island by bike, with well-marked routes leading through forests, along the coast, and to sandy beaches. One of the most popular trips is to Dueodde Beach, famous for having the finest sand in Denmark – so fine it was once used in hourglasses. Here, you can relax, swim in the clear Baltic waters, and taste the island’s legendary Krøllebølle ice cream, named after Bornholm’s mischievous troll.
In the heart of Bornholm lies Paradise Hills (Paradisbakkerne), a hilly landscape filled with dramatic rock formations, forests, and hiking trails. One of the most popular attractions here is the legendary Rokkestenen, a 35-ton granite boulder that is believed to be moveable if you push it in just the right spot. Trying to rock the stone is a favorite challenge for both children and adults.
Nearby, you will find Echo Valley (Ekkodalen), located in Almindingen Forest, Denmark’s third-largest forest. Here visitors can test the valley’s famous acoustics by shouting across the cliffs and listening to the echo bounce back. Surrounded by lush greenery and wildlife, it is one of the island’s most unique and family-friendly experiences.
With well-marked trails, Almindingen and Paradise Hills are perfect for hiking, picnics, and outdoor adventures, offering a glimpse of Bornholm’s diverse natural landscape beyond its beaches and coastal cliffs.
Located 20 km (12.5 miles) east of Bornholm, the Ertholmene Archipelago marks Denmark’s easternmost point. This small group of islands consists of Christiansø, Frederiksø, Græsholmen, and several smaller islets and skerries, each offering rugged natural beauty and fascinating history.
The archipelago is home to the world’s first naval base and fortress, built in the 17th century to protect Danish interests in the Baltic Sea. Today, visitors can explore the well-preserved fortifications, enjoy birdwatching, and experience the untouched landscapes that make Ertholmene truly unique.
Boats depart daily from Gudhjem and Svaneke on Bornholm, making it easy to plan a day trip. While in Gudhjem, don’t miss the chance to taste two of Bornholm’s culinary specialties: smoked herring and “Sol over Gudhjem” – herring served with onion, chives, and a raw egg yolk on rye bread.
